Mechanical engineers primary duties are to planning and design different tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical equipment. They also oversee installation, operation, maintenance and repairs of equipment. Mechanical engineers require several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training. They earn approximately $42 an hour, and the need for such workers typically grows at an average rate, from about 5% to 9% per year. Positions related to mechanical engineers include aerospace engineers, electrical engineers, electronics engineers, photonics engineers, and manufacturing engineering technologists.

Commonly Performed Tasks

There are many tasks that mechanical engineers must perform regularly. Mechanical engineers read and interpret different prints and drawings and research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain a variety of equipment. Mechanical engineers work with others to implement operating procedures, resolve malfunctions, and provide technical information. They develop and monitor production, investigate equipment failures when necessary and recommend solutions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports
  • Design, evaluate, install, operate, or maintain mechanical products, equipment, or processes
  • Confer with others to implement procedures, resolve malfunctions, or provide technical information
  • Develop or coordinate all aspects of production, including fabrication or operation of designs
  • Investigate equipment difficulties to diagnose operation problems and recommend remedial actions
